There's a particular kind of quiet that only arrives once the day is finally over.

The emails stop, The house softens and for a few precious minutes you get the just....breathe.

That's the feeling we set out to create.

A few years ago Pete and I went to a trade show looking for new products. We kept coming back to candles. There was something about them that felt right, the idea of creating a calm atmosphere at the end of the day really appealed to us.

When we looked into buying them wholesale, the prices were simply too high for the quality we wanted to offer. So we decided to try making them ourselves.

Our daughter already had a DIY candle-making kit, so the three of us sat down at home and had a go. We liked the process more than we expected. It was satisfying, creative and felt good to be making something with our own hands. We ordered proper ingredients, spent months melting, blending, pouring and testing and gradually worked out exactly what we wanted our candles to be: clean-burning, free from unnecessary chemicals with a soft wooden-wick crackle and good enough that we would happily light them in our own home.

That is still how we make every candle - in small batches, using pure coconut wax and carefully chosen fragrance oils with the same family standards we started with in our kitchen.

We didn't set out to build a big brand. We simply wanted candles that felt honest and relaxing and that we could stand behind with confidence. Somerset Candles is the result.
